The advantages of a good synthetic are better resistance to oxidation (thermal breakdown which turns the oil dark and increases the viscosity), and the synthetic will flow better in very cold weather and thin out less at very high temperatures. If you compare a mineral 5w-30 to a synthetic 5w-30, they will have the same viscosity at the reference temperature points (0 and 100 degrees C) but flow better below 0C and thin out less above 100C. So you have better engine protection at the worst summer temps and easier starting in the middle of winter with full-synthetics. Also film strength is better with synthetics which could be an advantage in highly-stressed engines and can protect cam lobes in extended idling conditions.
