On a modern fuel-injected car, if the larger diameter exhaust leads to a decrease in overall backpressure, you should gain a small amount of performance. It is possible that a poorly designed larger pipe could have the opposite effect if all the transitions and bends were not carefully designed.
The myth that some engines benefit from a certain amount of backpressure stems from the possibility that on old carbureted engines, reducing the exhaust restriction can screw up the carburetor mixture enough to hurt performance
