Diesels have traditionally been worth the extra cost due to the excellent fuel economy and durability you have been able to expect. Current NOx emissions in most of the world are very difficult for Diesel engines to attain, and the result has been that the cost of the engine plus very complicated emissions systems have risen greatly. In addition, these NOx emissions standards hurt the efficiency of new Diesels. So the cost and the benefits are worse than they were a doze years ago. The VW scandal was all about trying to cheat to improve the cost/benefit ratio of the Diesel engine system.
So while the cost/benefit of Diesels is getting worse, new highly-efficient gasoline and gasoline-hybrid powertains are now as or more efficient than the Diesel option, and get by with reliable and inexpensive 3-way catalyst emissions systems. And, since you can expect at least a quarter-million miles of reliable service from any modern gasoline engine (if properly maintained), the durability benefit of Diesels is also gone.
