Whats your take on glueing metals together instead of welds? I’ve noticed that welds can be pretty weak compared to epoxy. Should manufacturers start moving towards glue instead of welds? Even in the wood industry, I think some are moving away from fasterners given how strong glue is.
The strength of any glue is not even close to that of a weld. Glues are effective in sheet-metal seams to supplement spot-welds and protect against corrosion. Glues can be effective where the total area of the glued joint can be large (like in a long seam) to make up for the relative weakness of the glue.
Oh man that’s interesting to hear lol. There is an adhesive scientist(Dr Steven Abbot) that I’m researching and he seems to prefer adhesives for most things. He does answer emails so I’m going to get him to elaborate.
The reason I’m asking this is because yes a car does use a lot of welds but I’ve seen cases where welds breaks on a tool and I’ve seen strong adhesives. And adhesives are also every now but under appreciated.
Adhesives are basically made of plastic, and they have a fraction of the strength of Aluminum or steel, but make up for that in area. Each spot-weld is fairly small, but you can increase the area or number of them.
