The rate of combustion in a Diesel is directly related to the rate of fuel injection. Each droplet of Diesel fuel burns in what is known as a diffusion flame. The clattering sound is due to the fact that the maximum burn rate is very high in a Diesel, so the maximum rate of pressure rise is also very high (the source of the noise), and this is all due to the rate of fuel injection, which must be very fast to get all of the fuel delivered in the short time available each engine cycle. Diesel combustion is not similar to knocking combustion in a gasoline engine, even though the sound is somewhat similar.
