Hi Dave, I’m having some issues with the overall brakes/abs and suspension on my Toyota hybrid.

About 2 years ago I decided to change out a ball joint on the front drivers side and accidently knocked the axle connection to the transmission loose. In turn, I removed the OEM axle nut to reinstall the axle arm but did not torque the axle nut correctly. I started to have certain issues shortly after where on the highway the car transmission would have short stutters and go away. So I replaced the axle. Shortly after that, the wheel bearing went bad.

I replaced this wheel bearing and it went bad after two days. I must’ve over torqued it because there were dent marks on my ball bearing press tools. So no problems there. I then replaced it a second time with more care and proper torque and now its gone bad again after another day of driving.

    The symptoms are:

    – brakes rotors are very hot to the touch
    – abs and brake lights are on(they been on because of the abs dc motor going bad)
    – the abs DC motor needs to be replaced because the brushes have worn down
    – rumbling noise when driving
    – brake shutters when braking
    – brakes loose all pressure and dash has a beep that goes on

I have another vehicle that I can fix and drive but this hybrid is having a ton of issues and I still want to fix it up but I can’t pinpoint the problem after having a go at it.

Another issue I had in regard to the wheel bearing, was when I went to torque it down to OEM specs(217ftlbs), the axle and axle nut started to pop a few times. The axle nut that came with the new axle was 5 sided compared to the tooth OEM nut.

Is it also possible to disable the ABS system together and just use regular brakes on a hybrid? Its a very costly and sophisticated system(to me) and not used 99.9% of the time.

I actually found out the a major cause of the problem which was the axle nut. The nut I was using was not OEM and couldn’t tighten down the whole unit altogether. This caused my bearings to fail, rotors rubbing against brake calipers, and suspension noises when turning.

I would strongly recommend against trying to disable the ABS on a Hybrid vehicle. In a hybrid, the ABS and regenerative braking are integrated with each other and must transition smoothly from regenerative to friction and then to ABS braking. It is all one system. Also there is a safety issue with disabling the ABS and you never know when an emergency situation will arise.

When you try to replace the wheel bearing, are you using the factory shop manual as reference?

I did not use a factory shop manual because I don’t have access to it and I do not want to spend money on manual. I mostly went by using youtube videos for reference. My issue was that the axle nut I was using didn’t match the OEMs nut as I found out by looking on the good bearing. Using the correct axle nut fixed all the issues. The bearing is still smooth and my MPG has continue to climb up from 20mpg to 27mpg, although I was getting 32mpgs before I has suspension issues.

I ended up replacing the same bearing 3 times within a month lol. It was really tough stuff. But I have a new appreciation for wheel bearings. Not only that, my other 3 bearings with 200k miles are still holding up which is insane.
